Saudi Dates & Qahwa: Hospitality Guide

Traditional Arabic coffee Gahwa and fresh dates

Medjool dates and Arabic coffee spiced with cardamom — the sacred greeting offered to every guest.

Traditional Saudi Qahwa Recipe

Authentic Saudi Qahwa has a distinct yellow-golden color and a tea-like consistency, flavored strongly with cardamom and saffron. It is served unsweetened, as the sweetness is provided by the dates served alongside it.

Brewing Instructions

  1. 1. Boil Coffee: In a **Dallah** (traditional brass pot) or a saucepan, bring 3 cups of water to a boil. Add the ground coffee and stir.
  2. 2. Simmer: Reduce heat and let the coffee simmer gently for 15 minutes. A golden foam will form on the surface.
  3. 3. Add Cardamom & Saffron: Turn off the heat. Add the crushed cardamom pods and saffron threads. If using rosewater, add it now. Cover and let it steep for 5 minutes. This allows the spices to bloom and the coffee sediment to settle at the bottom.
  4. 4. Filter & Pour: Carefully pour the liquid coffee into a clean, pre-warmed serving Dallah, leaving the grounds behind.
  5. 5. Serve: Pour the hot, golden Gahwa into tiny handle-less cups (finjan). Serve with a side of fresh dates.
